How to Read the Bible When You Do Not Know Where to Start

The Paralysis of Page One

You bought a Bible. Or downloaded an app. Or someone gave you one with your name embossed on the cover. And now it sits there, 1,200 pages of tiny text, 66 books, names you cannot pronounce, and absolutely no idea where to begin.

So you do what most people do: nothing.

That is not a failure. That is a design problem. Nobody handed you a map. So let us fix that.

Where to Actually Start

Forget Genesis. (For now.) Forget Revelation. Forget any plan that asks you to read the entire Bible in a year. That is a marathon, and you need a first step.

Here are three starting points that work, depending on what you need right now:

If You Want to Know Jesus: Start with the Gospel of John

John's Gospel was written specifically so that "you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God" (John 20:31). It is personal, theological, and deeply moving. Twenty-one chapters. You can read it in a week if you do three chapters a day.

If You Need Comfort: Start with the Psalms

The Psalms cover every human emotion: joy, anger, grief, fear, gratitude, confusion. Start with the well-known ones: Psalm 23, 27, 46, 91, 103, 139. Read one a day and let it be your prayer.

If You Want Practical Wisdom: Start with Proverbs

There are 31 chapters in Proverbs, one for each day of the month. Read the chapter that matches today's date. It is bite-sized and immediately applicable.

The Rules That Do Not Exist

Let us clear up some myths that keep people from starting:

  • "You have to read it in order." You do not. The Bible is a library, not a novel. Jump in anywhere

  • "You need to read a certain amount each day." Five verses count. One chapter counts. There is no minimum

  • "You should understand everything you read." You will not. Neither did the original readers. Keep going anyway

  • "You need a study Bible or commentary." Helpful later, but not required. The Holy Spirit is a better teacher than any footnote

A One-Week Starter Plan

If you want something concrete, try this:

  • Day 1: John 1, the Word becomes flesh

  • Day 2: John 3, Nicodemus and being born again

  • Day 3: John 4, the woman at the well

  • Day 4: Psalm 23, the Lord is my shepherd

  • Day 5: Psalm 139. You are fearfully and wonderfully made

  • Day 6: John 15, abide in the vine

  • Day 7: Romans 8, nothing can separate you from God's love

Read one chapter each day. Write down one sentence that stood out. That is your week. That is enough.

The Secret Nobody Tells You

Here is the truth about starting: where you begin matters far less than the fact that you begin.

People who have read the Bible for decades still discover new things in passages they have read a hundred times. The Word is living. It meets you differently in every season. So wherever you start, you are starting right.

Stop waiting to feel ready. Open the book. Read the words. Let God do the rest.
